DescriptionDedicated on June 20, 1894, the Alpha Kappa Phi Monument was a memorial to the members of AKP who had served with the Union forces during the Civil War. Built at a cost of $1400, the sculptor was Lorado Taft. Standing eigheen feet, eight inches, it is subscribed with the names of seventy-eight Alpha Kappa Phi members. On the base is a bas-relief of Lee's surrender by Johann Gelert. The date of the dedication was the 34th anniversary of the mustering into service of the old 4th Michigan Infantry.
